Okay, most people eat hamburgers. Is it only because humans are considered “omnivores”? Discover the answers by watching the four parts of this science show and reading the information below. And to take this learning adventure into your classroom, have your teacher download the free Discussion Guides at the bottom of this page so everyone can share in the fun of this inquiry based learning.

We eat both meat and veggies. So unless you’re a total vegetarian, you eat meat too. But what’s the science behind the complex proteins in beef that powers our brains and bodies?  Some think it’s the  “Z-I-P” combo of zinc, iron, and protein that puts beef on the MyPlate nutrition guide published by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Some people are pretty savvy about the beef they consume. For instance, some people prefer grass-finished beef. That’s cattle that are raised on pastures their entire lives. The other common way cattle are raised is where they spend most of their lives on pastures, but for a time they are fed a mixture of grass and grain. The meat from these animals is called grain-fed beef. So cattle live the majority of their lives in pastures, where they eat grass –  something we as humans can’t digest.  Cattle basically convert indigestible plant nutrients into human food.  Their four-chambered stomach helps with that trick.
