How do we know that the food we eat is safe, like beef for instance? Discover the answers by watching this Serious Science video and reading the information below. And to take this learning adventure into your classroom, have your teacher download the free Lesson Activity at the bottom of this page so everyone can share in the fun of this inquiry based learning.

With beef, it begins with the cattle ranchers and beef farmers who provide their cattle with appropriate feed and a clean environment. They are dedicated to raising their animals with humane treatment that will maximize their growth and health.  In doing this, beef producers follow strict rules about what cattle can be fed. These rules prevent occurrences of “mad cow disease” or “BSE” in the U.S.A. The government also has strict regulations for the use of growth promotants that develop lean muscle and reduce fat in beef cattle. Regulations are also in place for the use of antibiotics used to treat sick animals. These regulations are followed carefully by the beef producers in order to protect both the animals and us humans from harm.
